Curriculum
At CORE, our teachers are our curriculum. We understand the power of human connection and help our students establish positive connections with their teachers and classmates. Our students’ social-emotional well being is our top priority. As we follow Georgia standards, academic growth and success is dependent upon our students being socially and emotionally regulated and available to learn.
A Therapeutic Approach
The Counselors at CORE Community School offer support to students in grades 6-12, their parents/guardians, and faculty. We are dedicated to supporting the whole student – we believe students are more than just a sum of their parts and require a dynamic approach to help them evolve into conscientious, happy, successful human beings. With this strength-based approach in mind, we look intentionally at how they can grow academically, socially, and physically within the classroom and as global citizens.
Individual counseling check-ins may be arranged at the request of a student, parent, teacher, or other staff member, and are short-term in nature. The counselor may speak with students about issues such as friendship, difficulty in the classroom, conflict resolution, anger, grief and loss, and other varied topics. We are available throughout the school day to support any emerging needs and provide respite and solution-focused skills. On occasion, we may offer regular weekly mini-check-ins for students that need a little additional support to maintain a healthy connection with school while reinforcing coping and conflict resolution skills.
Due to the nature of a school environment, one of the goals of the counselors is to assist the student in being able to engage in their school day. For students that require more intensive one-on-one support that is outside the scope of what can be done within our school environment, the counselors are happy to provide referrals to outside specialists to ensure that students can have their needs met in a safe space outside of their school setting.

Integrated
Learning is about making connections. Our curriculum is designed to help kids make connections between subjects, ideas and previous knowledge. These connections lead to deeper understanding of big ideas. Our curriculum is a combination of conceptual understanding of these big ideas and fundamental skill work. We follow state and national standards for scope and sequence, but use flexibility when it comes to pace and depth. We use a variety of different curriculum resources, materials and programs. |

Individualized
We understand and respect that people learn best in different ways. We help our students to better understand their own learning, specifically identifying their strengths and using these to improve in their areas of difficulty. We also help students to discover and gain independence with learning strategies that help them in different areas. |

Identity Development We believe it is just as important for kids to spend time reflecting on who they are as it is to grow academically. Our students engage in consistent self-reflection throughout the school day, thinking about who they are and who they want to be. We guide our students to set both short and long-term goals, and to engage in honest reflection about their growth and progress throughout the year. |
